VALDOSTA, GA - News release from Valdosta Police Department

In reference to the earlier media release, arrest warrants have been issued for the arrest of Freddrick Tooley, African American male, 21 years of age.

Arrest warrants were signed for Aggravated Assault (4 counts), Burglary, Possession of a Knife During the Commission of a Crime, Motor Vehicle Theft, and Simple Battery.

The Valdosta Police Department is currently looking for Tooley and the burgundy, 2002 Chevrolet Impala, Georgia license plate DP32VQ.

Recognizing the Civil War sesquicentennial, Valdosta State University will host a series of discussions regarding the meaning of freedom and the Battle of Antietam, which changed the course of the war, helped free millions of people, and devastated Sharpsburg, Md. 

A joint effort of the Department of History, Archives and Special Collections, and the Georgia Humanities Council, “Let’s Talk About It: Making Sense of the Civil War” will kick off on Tuesday, Aug. 28.

LOWNDES COUNTY, GA - The Georgia Department of Labor announced Thursday that the preliminary unemployment rate in the Southwest Georgia area rose to 9.8 percent in June, up seven-tenths of a percentage point from 9.1 percent in May.

The rate increased because 541 new job seekers entered the labor force, but were unable to find work, pushing unemployment up 1,204. 

The number of jobs in the state dropped by 8,200, or two-tenths of a percentage point, from 3,941,500 in May to 3,933,300 in June.

The 2012 June unemployment rate for Lowndes County is 9.5 percent.

Valdosta Mayor John Gayle announced the winners in the 2012 Valdosta People’s Choice Photo Contest at a special reception held at the Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts, on July 20. 

The contest, sponsored by the City of Valdosta and the Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts drew in over 100 entries that captured life in Valdosta through photography.
