State Farm donates $10K to Valdosta City and Lowndes Co. Schools

VALDOSTA, GA - State Farm agents donated $10,000 to Lowndes County Schools and Valdosta City Schools and presented the check during the Winnersville Classic.

The check was equally divided amongst both the Valdosta City Schools and Lowndes Education Improvement Foundation (LEIF).

Valdosta City Schools will use their share towards creating a State Farm Grant that enable Valdosta City School teachers to use funds towards their classroom and support the Teacher of the Year program and banquet.

September unemployment rate for Lowndes County

LOWNDES COUNTY, GA – The Georgia Department of Labor announced Thursday that the preliminary unemployment rate in the Southwest Georgia area declined to 9.0 percent in September.

The rate declined primarily because there were 370 fewer layoffs in manufacturing, construction, retail trade, transportation and warehousing, administrative and support services, and accommodations and food services, plus 1,037 more people were employed.

The September unemployment rate for Lowndes County it is 8.4 percent.

The City of Valdosta received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) of the United States and Canada for its Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) for Fiscal Year 2010-2011.

WGTC receives accreditation for health program

VALDOSTA, GA - Wiregrass Georgia Technical College’s received accreditation on their Health Information Technology program from The Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM).

CAHIIM approved the program’s accreditation status during their September meeting. The WGTC Health Information program was reviewed by the CAHIIM Commissioners as well as the Panel of Accreditation Reviewers and ended up meeting and or exceeding the minimum accreditation standards set by CAHIM.

Musicians raise $2K for literacy volunteer program of South GA

VALDOSTA, GA – Different academic departments from Valdosta State University and the band The Backstreet Blazers hosted an event to raise awareness about illiteracy.

Rockin' for a Cause was held Friday, October 5 at the American Legion Post 13.

The goal for the night was to raise awareness illiteracy and to raise funds for the Literacy Volunteer Program of South Georgia.

LVP provides one-on-one tutoring for people dealing with illiteracy who are at least 16 years-old or older.
