Quartet returns to VSU for one-night performance

VALDOSTA, GA - News release from Valdosta State University

Featuring Katherine Geeseman on cello, Wonkak Kim on clarinet, Eun-Hee Park on piano, and Valdosta State University’s very own M. Brent Williams on violin, enhake will return to Whitehead Auditorium for a one-night performance at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 12.

The award-winning, world-renowned quartet will perform Libby Larsen’s Rodeo Reina del Cielo, a work both written for and dedicated to enhake; Douglas Knehans’ Rive; and Olivier Messiaen’s monumental work, Quatuor pour la fin du temps.

Love light tree to benefit stories of healing campaign

Valdosta Chief of Police to retire

Valdosta Chief of Police Frank Simons has announced his retirement from the City of Valdosta, effective Jan. 1, 2013, following 17 ½ years of public service “to protect and serve” the city of Valdosta and its citizens.

In June 1995, Valdosta City Manager Larry Hanson—then interim city manager—hired Chief Simons as one of his first tasks in office and at a time when the city department was without a chief and was facing many challenges.

October unemployment rate for Lowndes County

LOWNDES COUNTY, GA - The Georgia Department of Labor announced Thursday that Southwest Georgia's preliminary unemployment rate declined to 8.9 percent in October.

That is one-tenth of a percentage point from the 9 percent in September and in October 2011 the rate was 9.7 percent.

Georgia's October seasonally adjusted unemployment rate declined to 8.7 percent, which was down three-tenths of a percentage point from the September rate of 9 percent. The October 2011 jobless rate was 9.7 percent.
