Solicitor General race heats up in Lowndes Co.
News

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB)- The courtroom is a place where Justin Cabral and Jason Cain have spent a lot of time; Cain most recently as a Public Defender and Cabral as the current Solicitor General.

"I've been a prosecutor for nine years, my opponent was a prosecutor for two years, he's a criminal defense attorney. But this job of solicitor is for prosecutor and I think it helps if the prosecutor is a career prosecutor," said Cabral.

But Cain argues he's a more well rounded candidate with over 18 years of experience, including time as a juvenile court judge and an assistant district attorney.

"I think with the experience I have I would bring a broader view to the office and I think that's what you need in the Solicitor's office, you need someone with a broader view with the legal experience that I bring to the table," said Cain.

Both of these candidates have never been elected Solicitor General. Earlier this year, Cabral was appointed to the position by Governor Nathan Deal.

The former solicitor general retired in January. Cabral applied for the position, and he was chosen by the Governor. Cabral says that's one reason he deserves to stay in the position.

"Prosecution is my life, I think there's a reason why the Governor appointed me, there's a reason why 60 percent of voters voted for me in the primary," said Cabral.

Cain says he's ready to prosecute all cases if he's elected.

"I want each person being brought into the Solicitor's office to be treated fairly, and not hold anybody any more accountable than I would hold myself as the prosecutor of the office,"said Cain.

Both candidates have spent the majority of their careers working in Lowndes County.

More than 11,000 people have voted early in Lowndes County so far. Early voting runs through November 2nd. Election Day is November 6th.
