Musicians raise $2K for literacy volunteer program of South GA

VALDOSTA, GA – Different academic departments from Valdosta State University and the band The Backstreet Blazers hosted an event to raise awareness about illiteracy.

Rockin' for a Cause was held Friday, October 5 at the American Legion Post 13.

The goal for the night was to raise awareness illiteracy and to raise funds for the Literacy Volunteer Program of South Georgia.

LVP provides one-on-one tutoring for people dealing with illiteracy who are at least 16 years-old or older.

Third grade students in Anne Cardella’s Gifted Program at W.G. Nunn recently received a grant from Carolina Biological Supply Company.

The class applied for and received the GloFish Aquarium Grant. The grant provided everything for the tank; filter, air pump, an LED lighting system that includes white, blue and black lights, rocks, plants, water treatment solution, and fish food.

BEN HILL, COFFEE, and LOWNDES COUNTIES, GA - Wiregrass Georgia Technical College will hold a Careers in Construction and Engineering Fair Thursday, October 4 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.

More than 300 students from Brooks Middle School and High School, Echols Middle and High School, Lowndes High, Lowndes Middle, Irwin County High, Fitzgerald High School, Berrien Academy, Cook High School, and Highland Christian Academy are expected to be at the fair.

Waldman to deliver poetry at VSU

Poet and fiddler Ken Waldman will perform at Valdosta State University on Tuesday, October 2, at 7:30 in the Magnolia Room 1 in the University Center.

Waldman, a former college professor, has published six poetry collections and released nine CDs that combine his Appalachian-style fiddle music with his original poetry.

Brooks County Health Department is hosting an adult immunization clinic on Friday, October 5 to encourage all adults to make sure they are up-to-date on their immunizations.

“Vaccines aren’t just for children,” states Norma Jean Johnson, RN, County Nurse Manager. “As adults, there are many vaccines we need to ensure good health and to not spread illness to those around us, especially the flu.

Adults can come by, enjoy a cup of coffee and get their needed vaccines at the clinic.”
