VALDOSTA, GA – Different academic departments from Valdosta State University and the band The Backstreet Blazers hosted an event to raise awareness about illiteracy.

Rockin' for a Cause was held Friday, October 5 at the American Legion Post 13.

The goal for the night was to raise awareness illiteracy and to raise funds for the Literacy Volunteer Program of South Georgia.

LVP provides one-on-one tutoring for people dealing with illiteracy who are at least 16 years-old or older.

Valdosta Mayor John Gayle spoke at the event pointing out how low literacy rates are associated with high unemployment levels.

The Backstreet Blazers ended up raising almost $2,000 for the LVP.

The Backstreet Blazers consist of Dr. Tom Hochschild, Ashlie Bean, Mark Prain, Allison Keeler, and Terry Chitwood.
