Valdosta to host electronic recycling event

VALDOSTA, GA – News release from the city of Valdosta

The City of Valdosta Public Works Department, in partnership with Keep Lowndes/Valdosta Beautiful (KLVB) and Atlanta Recycling Solutions, will host an Electronic Recycling Event on Saturday, March 31, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Mathis Auditorium, at 2300 N. Ashley Street.

This event is one of two annual e-recycling events and other year-round efforts that support the city’s recycling program by providing citizens with a viable solution to properly dispose of their electronics.

Banks Lake is choked with aquatic plants such as fanwort and bladderwort. This makes boating difficult and harms the health and quality of the fishery.

A periodic drawdown of the water level is the most effective and economical method to control aquatic plants at Banks Lake. By drawing down the lake, refuge managers will improve the sport fishery and achieve multi-year aquatic plant control.

Environmental toxins linked to hardening of arteries

(HealthDay News) -- Environmental pollutants such as dioxins, PCBs and pesticides are associated with hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), according to a new study.

Atherosclerosis is the major underlying cause of cardiovascular diseases, which are the most common cause of death in industrialized countries, said the researchers at Uppsala University in Sweden.

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., applauded Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack’s decision to declare 150 drought-stricken counties in Georgia disaster areas, as requested by Gov. Nathan Deal. Since April 2011, many parts of Georgia have experienced extreme weather conditions and suffered numerous crop losses. With the USDA Secretarial Disaster Designation, Georgia farmers will be able to apply for emergency loans and other benefits to ease losses.

VALDOSTA, GA – The Keep Lowndes-Valdosta Beautiful Organization will have their regular scheduled monthly meeting Monday, July 18 at 5:30 p.m., in the Valdosta City Hall Annex MPR.

KLVB is a non-profit organization dedicated to education and promotion concerning the environment.

Lowndes County will receive disaster designation

LOWNDES COUNTY, GA - Gov. Deal sent a letter to the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack asking that Georgia counties be declared disaster areas because of Georgia’s ongoing drought.

Lowndes County was on that list of 22 counties that will be declared a disaster area and will be able to apply for emergency loans and other benefits provided by the Food, Conservation and Energy Act of 2008:
