Special Report: Helping the Red Cross Help You

WORTH CO., GA (WALB)- Right now, American Red Cross volunteers are at work in Oklahoma staffing shelters and serving meals and helping tornado survivors put their lives back together.

We all know the Red Cross is there during those big disasters. But the emergency to which they respond most is a house fire, and they desperately need volunteers to help.

Seven months ago, a Worth County yard was the site of a 3,200 square foot house. The Jones family hammered every nail during construction.

VSU student shot at party

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB)-  

A Valdosta State University student is recovering in the hospital after he was shot at a party early this morning.

Valdosta Police say a party got out of hand last night at Grove Apartments.

Shortly after police responded to the complex for a noise complaint, they heard gunshots in an upstairs unit.

22-year-old Aric Simmons was taken to South Georgia Medical Center with a gunshot wound to his lower torso.

So far police have made no arrests.

Horse dies after contracting EEE virus

BROOKS COUNTY, GA (WALB)- Health officials are warning you to protect yourself from mosquitoes after a horse died from Eastern Equine Encephalitis in south Georgia.

The first case of EEE in Georgia this year took the life of a two-year-old horse in Brooks County. Veterinarian Mary Rogers had to put the western performance horse to sleep after he was bitten by an infected mosquito.

Wiregrass/Valdosta calls off classes

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB)- Due to a water line break, the Valdosta Campus of Wiregrass Georgia Technical College is closing for the remainder of the day, May 22.

Classes are canceled and all offices  are closed for Wednesday, May 22. Classes and office hours will resume as normal on Thursday, May 23.

Brooks Co. horse tests positive for EEE

QUITMAN, GA (WALB)-  Information from The Georgia Department of Agriculture-

The Georgia Department of Agriculture has confirmed one positive case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) in a horse found in Brooks County. This is the first positive case of EEE found in a horse in South Georgia this year.

EEE is the inflammation or swelling of the brain caused by the eastern equine encephalitis virus. EEE is regarded as one of the most serious mosquito-borne diseases in the United States according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Lakeland Police Chief resigns

LAKELAND, GA (WALB)- The Lakeland Police Department is looking for a new police chief.

Chief Jeff Harrison resigned Friday after nearly three years in the position. City officials say he's taking a higher paying job in North Dakota. City leaders hired Darrell Watson as the interim chief while the city begins the application process.

Moore, OK native living in Valdosta says family is safe

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB)- A Valdosta man born and raised in Moore, Oklahoma says his family and friends there are all okay. He grew up just two miles from the hardest hit area of town.

Todd McCawley spent the first 17 years of his life in Moore Oklahoma. He says even for a town used to being on alert for tornadoes, yesterday's devastation was shocking.

"They knew they were going to have some storms, but they didn't wake up that morning thinking something like this is going to happen," said McCawley.
