Lady Blazers fall to UC San Diego

LOUISVILLE, KY- The Valdosta State softball team was unable to recover from a poor start and the Lady Blazers fall 7-5 to UC San Diego in the first round of the NCAA DII national tournament.

The Tritons score 6 runs in the 1st and add another in the 2nd.

Lady Blazer pitcher Alanna Hadley gave up all 7 runs but only two were earned.

Hadley walked five in just two innings of work.

The Lady Blazers scored 3 runs in the top top of the 7th before their rally ended.

VSU plays Augustana in an elimination game 3:00 p.m. on Thursday.

Ty Ty grad wins VSU's top award

VALDOSTA -- Double major Alex Lawhorne claimed the 2012 Annie Powe Hopper Award, Valdosta State University's most prestigious academic award presented to an undergraduate, and was also named Outstanding Student in Arts and Sciences.

A first generation student from Ty Ty, Lawhorne is also this year's recipient of the Outstanding Senior in Philosophy and Religious Studies Award and the William M. Morrow Political Science Award. He is also a member of several honor societies including Alpha Chi, Phi Kappa Phi, Pi Gamma Mu, Omicron Delta Kappa and Golden Key.

Lady Blazers prepared for nationals

LOUISVILLE, KY-  

The Valdosta State softball team has reached their destination of the NCAA division two national tournament.

Now, their goal is to win their first national championship.

VSU will open play Wednesday against UC-San Diego the defending division two national champions.

Head coach Thomas Macera believes the road to Louisville has them ready for this eight team battle for the national championship.

Digging Deeper: Dougherty Gang facing charges in 3 states

ALBANY, GA- The Dougherty gang is back in Georgia answering to bank robbery charges as part of a multi-state crime spree.

Twenty-two year old Ryan, 27 year old Dylan, and 29 year old Lee Grace appeared in federal court in Albany, eight months after an aggressive robbery at the Certus Bank in Valdosta.

They've already been sentenced to state charges in Colorado and will also face charges in Florida.

LENOX, GA- A woman and three children are still recovering after their car was struck by a train Friday in Lenox.

Two members of the family died in the crash. The railroad crossing does not have the crossing arms to warn drivers of oncoming trains.
